Posted by Robert Gammon on Wednesday, 23 April 2008, at 9:05 a.m., Richard, I have seen videos of open cell foam being poured into walls similar to yours. the foam expands to fill the cavities and puts nearly no pressure on the framing. Closed cell foam has a well deserved reputation for stressing the frame. Keep in mind, open cell is 0.5 lb material, closed cell is 2.0 lb material. The method is then to drill a series of 1 inch holes, high in the wall and another set just below the horizontal brace. Inject the foam in the holes and let it set. Fill the holes. Course, I do not recommend this as a do it yourself project. Even tho ocf puts little or no pressure, it still expands at roughly 100:1. A little dab goes a LONG way.
This site is all about building a cool, energy efficient house, that makes maximum use of earth sheltered design, passive solar heating and cooling, geothermal exchange energy management, and right sizing of the house for it's designated use. The home's placement is on a south-facing hillside in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. This site describes the design process, the technologies used and the expected results. We also have a comprehensive Links Page for anyone who is also interested in designing a similar project. |
