Re: roof pitch [ Read Responses | Return to the Index ]
Posted by Phil on Monday, 28 April 2008, at 9:54 a.m., I have had trouble in one area of my roof. It's where two roof planes meet at a shallow inside angle (45deg). With our funny cold/hot day cycles, snow and then ice do build up in the valley. When the ice finaly starts melting, it flows far enough back up the shingles to cause a leak. After it happened the first time, I went back and tried to really seal the valley shingles. It didn't work 100%. Last sumnmer I added an electric snow melt down the valley and out to the eaves. It worked great, but added to my power bill. I don't think my builder did the best job of adding metal or plastic flashing in the roof valleys. It would have been fine for a steeper pitch, but 4:12 IS pretty low.
This site is all about building a cool, energy efficient house, that makes maximum use of earth sheltered design, passive solar heating and cooling, geothermal exchange energy management, and right sizing of the house for it's designated use. The home's placement is on a south-facing hillside in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. This site describes the design process, the technologies used and the expected results. We also have a comprehensive Links Page for anyone who is also interested in designing a similar project. |
