Actually, a w-w heat pump can heat and cool quite effectively if the hot/cold water is directed to air coils.
So, for heating you can direct hot water to the floor.
For DHW, you can direct hot water to the storage tank.
For cooling you can generate cold water and feed it to an air coil in an air handler.
This air cooling method can be very effective in zoned systems where a small aircoil and fan is located in each zone, then you just need to plumb water pipes to each zone's air handler. This method replaces zoned ductwork (and damper valves) with copper water pipes.
