Easier to Read WEL Chart - Rolling Averages Possible? [ Read Responses | Post a New Response | Return to the Index ]
Posted by Bill Neukranz on Sunday, 4 May 2008, at 8:10 p.m. I'm interested in improving upon my Entering Water Temperature (EWT) chart, but, I can't figure out how to do it. I'd appreciate any suggestions that come to mind. I've got a 50 week chart showing EWT (see below). I'm averaging the EWT across the day. The chart updates 3 times per day (sample rate is every 8 hours) with the daily avg EWT. The problem is evident during this 'shoulder' part of the year where we are not cooling every day - or only cooling late in the day every day. The chart updates at 3 AM, 11 AM, and 7 PM. If there's no daily average by 3 AM, then the chart goes to zero. If there's no daily average by 11 AM, then again the chart goes to zero. For the past 5 weeks, this has been the situation with cooling (and before that similarly with heating). Occasionally we don't use any cooling for a day. Most other days, we don't use cooling until the afternoon. So the chart is really 'noisy.' I'd like to clean up the chart. The obvious thought is to program up a 7 day 'moving average' using WEL Expressions. A 7 day average is accurate enough for the purposes of the chart - to clearly illustrate the variation of EWT as a function of time of year (probably the most common question I get: how does the water temp vary as a function of season?). But I can't figure out how to program a moving average of any duration. Can anyone help? And if a moving average isn't possible, does anyone have suggestions for what else I might do to make this chart not so 'noisy?' This is probably the most looked at chart I have, based on the quantity of questions I field on my charts. Thanks! Best regards, Bill
