I ended up using the full version of Chief Architect, but I started with the $100 version and worked up once I knew I had to do all the custom elements like windows and roof lines.
I think Home and Garden's 3D design software is made by Chief Architect so it's probably a good starting point.

This site is all about building a cool, energy efficient house, that makes maximum use of earth sheltered design, passive solar heating and cooling, geothermal exchange energy management, and right sizing of the house for it's designated use.
