Re: Loss of temp sensors due lighting. [ Read Responses | Return to the Index ]
Posted by Phil on Monday, 29 June 2009, at 11:58 a.m., I think there have been a few other instances of losses from lightning strikes. In two cases (at one location) it appears that the Rabbit board may have actualy been fried. Fairly early in the life cycle of the WEL I added a pretty beefy surge supressor to the 1-wire line, but it's at the WEL end, so I'm sure the far ends of the bus aren't immune to high voltage transients. It's interesting that your outside temp sensor was OK. This is where I'd expect things to be worse. I'm sure the main problem is that the WEL's bus is directly connected to the board (not transformer coupled like Ethernet) and there is no grounded shield. I'm not sure if adding transient supressors to the bus ends would help. Responses
This site is all about building a cool, energy efficient house, that makes maximum use of earth sheltered design, passive solar heating and cooling, geothermal exchange energy management, and right sizing of the house for it's designated use. The home's placement is on a south-facing hillside in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. This site describes the design process, the technologies used and the expected results. We also have a comprehensive Links Page for anyone who is also interested in designing a similar project. |
