Question on construction costs [ Read Responses | Return to the Index ]
Posted by Scott Hardin on Thursday, 25 February 2010, at 7:46 a.m. Phil, Really enjoyed your site and your commitment to sustainable living. My wife and I are starting our journey and have been researching the various construction techniques and materials (passive solar, earth sheltered, thermal mass, geothermal, rammed earth, strawbale, SIPs, AAC, ICFs, etc). I am finding it difficult to get a "real" cost of construction as there are endless combinations that can be applied. I have seen construction costs of $30/sf for owner-built rammed-earth designs where 60% of the materials are recycled (tires, wood, etc) to over $200/sf for multi-walled underground housing. Would you be willing to share in rough estimates how much it cost for you to build out your home for the base construction and then some of the additional "green" features you went with (geothermal, ventilation)? Again, thanks for providing such detailed information on your site, it has been a pleasure to spend quality time here! Scott
This site is all about building a cool, energy efficient house, that makes maximum use of earth sheltered design, passive solar heating and cooling, geothermal exchange energy management, and right sizing of the house for it's designated use. The home's placement is on a south-facing hillside in Deep Creek Lake, Maryland. This site describes the design process, the technologies used and the expected results. We also have a comprehensive Links Page for anyone who is also interested in designing a similar project. |
